Essential Fatty Acids - what are they & why you need them!

Essential Fatty Acids - what are they & why you need them!

Essential Fatty Acids (EFA’s) are important for optimal skin functioning & are critical for many important processes in the body, such as cardiovascular health, optimal brain & cognitive function, healthy eye sight, hormone & nervous system support.

  • Omega-3: Studies have found that omega 3 can help reduce inflammation, reduce acne, support wound healing, and even reduce UV damage, by having an anti-inflammatory effect on the skin & body. Omega 3 is also thought to support short-chain fatty acids in the gut, which can support the gut lining. You can get your omega-3s by consuming healthy fats from oily fish, such as salmon, walnuts, flax seeds, hemp seeds and chia seeds.
  • Omega-6: fantastic for promoting skin health and can be consumed internally or directly applied to the skin. Linoleic acid omega-6 is the most abundant polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) found in the skin. It is required for the synthesis of ceramides that make up 40-50% of the lipids in the upper layers of the skin and support a strong skin barrier. A diet low in omega-6 fatty acids can lead to dry, scaly skin with a poor barrier function. Research has found that people with acne often have low amounts of linoleic acid in their sebum (the skins natural oil). Sebum that is low in linoleic acid is thought to become stickier, leading to blocked pores. Consuming a supplement containing Omega 6 can help to improve the quality of the skins oil, leading to fewer, less inflamed breakouts.

How do you know if you are deficient?

Our bodies do not produce Essential Fatty Acids, therefore they must be consumed in our diet, or supplemented. You can suffer from an EFA deficiency if your diet is low in EFA-rich foods, such nuts & seeds or oily fish like salmon.

EFA deficiencies can be associated with symptoms such as low mood, skin dryness, skin irritation & rashes, fatigue, joint point, brittle hair and nails. Low levels of Omega 6 have been found in women suffering PMT, so if you suffer with PMT, supplementing Evening Primrose Oil may help to relieve  symptoms.
